InstallShield is a software tool for creating installers or software packages. InstallShield was also the name of the company that originally created it until it was acquired by Macrovision in 2004. InstallShield was founded by Viresh Bhatia and Rick Harold. On April 1, 2008, the Software Business Unit (that includes the InstallShield brand) was sold to a private equity firm, Thoma Cressey Bravo, who formed a new company: Acresso Software Corporation

InstallShield is primarily used for installing software for Microsoft Windows desktop and server platforms, but it can also be used to manage software applications and packages on a variety of handheld and mobile devices. Additionally, there is now a version of the InstallShield Wizard for Linux. Sun Microsystems uses it for its Linux installations,for example, Java, NetBeans and so on.
